Specimens measure between 12.3 and 12.4 meters (40.4 and 40.7 feet); however, according to most modern estimates, the T rex could grow to a length of over 12.4 meters (40.7 feet), a height of 3.66–3.96 meters (12–13 feet), and a body mass of 8.87 metric tons (9.78 short tons).

Despite other theropods rivaling or exceeding Tyrannosaurus rex in size, this land predator is believed to have exerted the strongest bite force among all terrestrial animals. A giant carnivore, Tyrannosaurus rex, preyed upon hadrosaurs, ceratopsians, ankylosaurs, and possibly sauropods. It was most likely the largest carnivore in its environment.

Dinosaurs were thought to be primarily scavengers, according to some experts. Among the longest debates in paleontology was whether Tyrannosaurus was a predator or a scavenger. Paleontologists generally accepted that Tyrannosaurus was an active predator and scavenger.
